YOUNG PERFORMANCE SERIES (Easy) (Red Cover)
Dedication A great example of ceremonial writing for concert band, Dedication has the requisite fanfares, chorales and a catchy processional tune. Since this is a Carl Strommen piece the scoring is expert and some syncopated rhythms and the odd 5/4 measure are sure to keep the band on its toes through several key changes to a powerful, fully scored and moving conclusion.

Mighty Mite (March) A delightfully tuneful march by a celebrated educator and composer, Mighty Mite has been effectively re-scored for young musicians by the gifted composer/arranger Sean O'Loughlin. Mighty Mite is unusual and particularly valuable as a teaching piece because of the melodic prominence given to the lower voiced instruments and the fact that the lively introduction and first strain are in a minor key. The lyrical trio, which features the woodwinds, is one reason why this piece is sure to be a popular favorite with any audience.

Quintus Using the Lydian mode on Eb, Larry Clark has fashioned a lively piece that pays tribute to the idea of the interval of the fifth both melodically and harmonically and the church modal system, that is the basis of so much western music. Quintus has Clark's trademark energy and melodic sweep and will have great appeal to young players who will respond to its idiosyncratic style and terrific energy.

Romanian Dances An original concert overture based on original melodies in Romanian style, Romanian Dances has verve and great energy. From the brassy opening, through the expressive and warmly contrasting middle section in triple meter, to the dramatic and brilliant conclusion the piece has color and personality to burn. Romanian Dances is vintage Del Borgo, and will be exciting for a young band to play.

Songs of the West - A Rhapsody for Band A sparkling new selection from master writer Robert Thurston, Songs of the West ably mixes original material with Western favorites like "Cindy" and "The Streets of Laredo," to create a richly scored tribute to the Americana West, as a source of creative inspiration. Festive and celebratory, the piece captures the verve and adventurous side of the Old West, without slighting the reflective side of the western experience. This is a superb piece for firing-up the imaginations of young people.

(There's No Place Like) Home for the Holidays A classic holiday standard by the great songwriting team of Al Stillman and Robert Allen is given a rousing, colorful and eminently playable arrangement by Larry Clark. Beginning with a lush chorale-style treatment of the refrain (with some jazzy harmonic touches), the tune's bridge is then introduced in a bright, up-tempo swing version featuring the trombones. The refrain returns in a hymn-style presentation by the woodwinds, which alternates with the jazzier approach. After the swing section is repeated, the warmly scored coda makes a satisfying conclusion to this expert version of a great seasonal song.

We Wish You A Merry (Latin) Christmas Carl Strommen in a Latin vein is bound to be a treat to play, and his treatment of We Wish You A Merry Christmas is no exception. Beginning with a section for percussion (including such "Latin" staples as Claves, Cowbell, Guiro and Maracas) this piece exploits Latin rhythms and colors with gusto. Much of the time the band plays in unison (a great way to reinforce solid habits of intonation) while the percussion gets to cook up a storm in the background.
