Waves of the Revolution
Sean O'Loughlin
One of the strongest pieces of the year, OLoughlins tribute to New Hampshires contribution to the Revolutionary War features glorious brass fanfares, blossoming woodwinds and exciting scoring for the percussion section. An aggressive theme in a minor key is the basis for this contest style piece, which is symphonic in nature. The combination of the themes towards the end of the piece brings it to an exciting conclusion.

The letters in the title of this piece serve as its musical inspiration. The piece is designed as a concert opener and has qualities reminiscent of the great fanfares from composer John Williams. The music features tight harmonies with brass flourishes and soaring woodwind lines punctuated by timpani and percussion.

A true march standard by a composer who is best known for this form, Independentia is certainly still considered one of the best marches in the repertoire. Balent works his magic to make this arrangement playable for most bands while keeping the integrity of the original musical ideas intact.

Here is a dynamic concert overture from composer Jospeh Compello. The first theme is bold and pointed while the second theme is lyrical and somewhat Wagnarian in nature. The warm harmonic prgression of the tranquil middle section creates delightful musical moments. A real winner for contest performance!

Here is one of the standard marches from the old Fillmore Bros. catalog. Considered one of Will Huff's best marches, the piece is tuneful and easy enough for most high school bands to be able to play. A perfect contest warm-up march!
