Contre Qui, Rose
Morten Lauridsen; arranged by H. Reynolds
Reynolds' first transcription of a Lauridsen choral work, O Magnum Mysterium, became an instant hit with band directors across the country. This second piece, in what we hope will be an ongoing series was carefully selected. The lush vocal harmonies that are signature of a Lauridsen choral translate perfectly to the winds and brasses, particularly in this excerpt from Les Chansons des Roses.

Chester Overture
William Schuman
Commissioned in 1956 by Pi Kappa Omicron and first performed in January 1957 by the University of Louisville Band, Chester Overture has gained a solid spot in the band repertory today. Featured on multiple state contest lists, available in numerous recordings, and a standard feature in high school and college band programs around the world, Chester Overture is the composers own adaptation of the third movement of his New England Triptych. The other two movements, Be Glad Then, America and When Jesus Wept, are also available separately for band and are now also important standards in the repertoire.

David Maslanka
Composer David Maslanka brings a short 3 minute fanfare into existence based on an inspiration from a prayer by St. Francis of Assisi. This piece is well within the reach of many high school bands. It's an opportunity for a broader spectrum of performers to play the music of this important composer. Undoubtedly it will become a standard in the band repertoire.

The Masks
Ronald LoPresti; Gregory Rudgers
The Masks was originally composed in 1955 as a two movement orchestral suite that was part of the American Composers' Edition Series produced by Eastman School of Music in conjunction with Carl Fischer. LoPresti, a student of Howard Hanson is perhaps best known for his Elegy for a Young American written for concert band. The Masks is reminiscent of the Elegy in its romantic style with rich contemporary harmonies. There is no programmatic significance to the title, according to LoPresti, other than the fact that the two movements are in contrasting moods, much like the Greek masks of comedy and drama. The transcription by Gregory Rudgers is authentic to the original piece and gives bands everywhere a new LoPresti piece of significance.

Carl Strommen
Master composer Carl Strommen has written for both choir and band for many years. Here, he creates an extended work for chorus and piano, or chorus and concert band with two pianos or piano and harp. The poetic text provides the perfect motivation and message for graduation performances and concerts, alike. For schools that provide “Prism” concerts for their performing arts programs, this would be the perfect selection. Beautiful and inspirational – a “must do” for serious music programs.
