Christmas
Go Tell It on the Mountain
arranged by Elizabeth Campbell; Traditional Spiritual
In this easy a cappella setting, the catchy baritone counterline fits the melody like a glove. Equally effective for SAB or SATB voices, it sings so naturally and easily that it will sound great with a minimum of rehearsal time. A terrific concert opener or encore piece, this is as good as it gets for developing voices!

A Christmas Greeting
David Eddleman
An anonymous, traditional text from “yules” gone by is set by David Eddleman in this fabulous TTBB holiday arrangement. Fast articulation of text and rhythmic, driving energy produce an exciting performance that embodies the festive feeling of the Christmas season. David packs a lot of “punch” into parts that are singable by most mens groups. This is a great finale for any holiday concert.

Venite Adoremus, Gesu Bambino
arranged by Ruth Schram; Adeste Fideles Latin Hymn by John Francis Wade, Gesu Bambino by Frederick Martens and Pietro Yon, Translated by Frederick Oakeley
Ruth Elaine Schram is a master of partner- song arranging and this beautiful traditional Christmas-song arrangement is no exception. She knows just how to weave melodies in order to create harmonies that are beautiful to hear and to sing. Adding a flute obligato/descant to the vocal arrangement, creating a beautifully supportive piano accompaniment, and weaving the Latin text into the last verse, make this a stunning arrangement that will certainly become a standard.

The Shepherd's Farewell
arranged by Bob Burroughs; From the Oratorio, Lenfance du Christ, Op.25, Music by Hector Berlioz, Text by Paul England
Arranged by Bob Burroughs for SATB voices, this unusual Christmas piece is as beautiful
today, as it was when it was written by Hector Berlioz in his Oratorio, Lenfance du Christ
in the 1800s. With pastoral sounds of pipes and horns in the accompaniment and
harmonization in the voicings that are signature Burroughs, this is a very unique and
striking work.

Good King Kong Looked Out
From A Consort of Choral Christmas Carols (S. 359), P.D.Q. Bach (1742 - 1807)? — Reverently Edited by PROFESSOR PETER SCHICKELE
Fabulous, fun, hilarious, and entertaining, this is PDQ Bach at his best. Singers are required to make sounds from “squish” to “squawk” and even play kazoos in order to produce the outlandish and creative performance of this unique piece. In the year of “King Kong” mania, this is the perfect closer to your Christmas program!

It Came Upon A Midnight Clear
arranged by Greg Jaspers; Music by Richard S. Willis, Text by Edmund H. Sears
This arrangement by Greg Jaspers is anything but “traditional.” Vocal jazz chords and the
vocal crystal bell tolling of the word “peace” throughout the arrangement, bring the audience to a truly emotional point as the words, “
the whole world bring back the sound” are sung as if church bells were tolling throughout a European countryside. With stunning artistry for painting the text with musical line, and with one of the most creative ears in the choral world, Greg arranges his first work for Carl Fischer. This is not easy, but the rewards are great.

arranged by Patrick Liebergen; Based on an English carol, Good Christian Men, Rejoice, Resonet in laudibus and Joy to the World - Music by George F. Handel
This is a lovely arrangement of “The Holly and the Ivy”, incorporating several other traditional English carols which add to the richness of this piece. Patrick Liebergen has also done a wonderful job writing editorial notes on the history of holly and ivy and why it is still used at Christmas time, today. With a jubilant feel and up-beat tempo, this is an addition to your program that is sure to be enjoyed by the audience.

Sweet Little Jesus Boy
Robert MacGimsey; arranged by Janet Pummill
This arrangement of Sweet Little Jesus Boy, by Janet Pummill, was first performed on
December 18 and 19, 2003 when it was premiered in Carnegie Hall, New York. It was
broadcast on WQXR radio in New York City on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, 2003,
and was performed by the Fort Worth - Texas Christian University Symphonic Choir and the New York Pops Orchestra, under the direction of Ronald Shirey. This choir was invited back for the 2005 Christmas Pops Concert at Carnegie Hall by a special invitation from New York Pops Conductor, Skitch Henderson. Sadly, Skitch died just prior to the performance in 2005, but the rave reviews from this performance continue to be heard. This beautiful and sensitive arrangement could be quite possibly the best and most popular ever done of this classic Christmas Spiritual.

Seven Carols for Christmas (O Come, Emanuel, Away in a Manger, Fum, Fum, Fum, Good Christian Men, Rejoice, So Blest a Sight, God Rest You Merry, Masters in This Hall
arranged by Alice Parker
In 1970, Robert Shaw asked me to write some arrangements of Christmas carols for The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Choruses. We had not worked together since the last album for the Robert Shaw Chorale, the Irish Folk Songs in 1967, and his move to Atlanta. He was planning a series of Christmas concerts, and was not satisfied with the settings he could find: they were apt to be too elaborate, with overly simple choral parts. He asked that the chorus be allowed to shine in rather open orchestrations, and gave me freedom to choose whichever titles I wished in a mix of familiar and unfamiliar tunes.
In Mr. Shaws acclaimed Christmas concert, the carols were scattered through the retelling of the story, in different patterns with the succeeding years. So they were not at the beginning intended to be a single concert piece, although I am frequently asked to share my preference for
a sequence. One possibility, using all the numbers, is:
O Come, Emmanuel
Away in a Manger
Fum, Fum, Fum!
Good Christian Men, Rejoice
So Blest a Sight
God Rest You Merry
Masters in This Hall
Another choice would be to split the above list into two parts, with the first three forming a little suite from varied sources, and the next four celebrating their British heritage. But you may order them as you wish, or use just one or two in a special program.
The enduring popularity of these arrangements has been a source of great satisfaction to me. It shows that these wonderful melodies, with their texts of love and hope, can unite different generations in the concert hall as well as in the church and at home. Even in the cacophony of todays musical world, their message shines clear and true. So now, “good Christian folk, rejoice,” and join your voices in “tidings of comfort and joy!”
—Alice Parker, 2006
