Flaming Arrow
Larry Clark
With a pronounced Native American flavor, this characteristically well-wrought Larry Clark piece alternates slow reflective music with an aggressive Allegro that includes rhythmic shouting and stamping. The return of the slow opening music at measure 35 leads to an accelerando and crescendo into the climactic return of the Allegro material and the exciting conclusion that may have the audience stamping and shouting!

North Point March
Joseph Compello
A traditionally styled March for the very youngest bands, North Point March uses only the first six notes of the B-flat major scale. Using this simple framework, Compello has created a very fine piece for introducing the American march-style to young people, and provided them with a particularly hummable tune in the trio.

Enchanted Village
Sean O'Loughlin
This is a dramatic work with an atmospheric, somewhat foreboding opening and a vigorous Allegro. Cleverly written, Enchanted Village is a rather stern piece (in natural minor) that succeeds in sounding more difficult than it is, despite being confined to the basic six notes first learned by beginning players. There are effective contrasts between legato and marcato playing that provide excellent teaching opportunities.

Go with the Flow
Andrew Balent
Andrew Balent has risen to the challenge of creating a stimulating piece of music from the limited ranges and rhythms possible at this grade level. Subtle rock elements and the contrast between the 4/4 meter of the vigorous opening and the meter of the slower, legato music in the contrasting section, give the director an occasion for discussing the various approaches to meter required in even the easiest music.

Not So Silent Night
Sean O'Loughlin
Using the basic melodic shape of Silent Night, Sean O'Loughlin has written a lively piece that goes in a quite different, more up-to-date direction than the familiar, reflective Carol. The noise makers of the percussion section are given a lively role to play, and the introduction, by the low brass, of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, in the middle of the piece, creates a somewhat ironic twist in this amusing re-imagining of a classic carol.
