The popular Irish Hymn tune, Slane (best known by the familiar first line of its standard text, Be Thou My Vision) is a great favorite of composer Larry Clark's. It is the basis for this grand set of variations. From the bardic fanfare of the opening, through a piccolo solo that suggests Gaelic piping and several variations on the lovely tune, this is a beautifully scored piece, rich in the flavor of the Emerald Isle.

The Gladiator

A lesser-known but unforgettable Sousa march is presented in a terrific arrangement for the modern concert band by the expert Andrew Balent. The opening idea has an intriguing tonal ambiguity (is it major or minor?) and the second strain, introduced by the saxophones, is a real Sousa gem. This is wonderful music by any standard, beautifully scored, and represents the American march style at its most ingratiating.

The luminous scoring is designed to show the band to its best advantage. The 6/8 meter of most of the piece is ideal for representing the flow of the river's steady progress to the sea.

Slavic Scherzo (Furiant)

Inspired by the Slavonic Dances of Czech master Antonin Dvorak, Joseph Compello has written his own Furiant, a Bohemian dance, usually in triple meter with frequently shifting accents. This dazzling little original piece makes much of the contrast between 6/8 and 3/4, and this variety of rhythmic pulse gives the piece tremendous energy and momentum. Slavic Scherzo is a selection that will energize the band and delight the audience in equal measure.
