It includes ample use of the trombone glissando (colloquially referred to as a smear). Featuring a lovely and appropriate use of mallet percussion instruments, especially bells and other delicate members of the percussion section, Northern Lights is evocative, melodically distinguished and cleverly scored to help a young band sound its best. The contrast between the natural minor of the woodwind melody at the beginning and the grander, major mode brass theme introduced later is nicely maintained throughout this very effective piece.

Mixing bits of Reveille with settings of two familiar Christmas time songs, Jingle Bells and Hark! the Herald Angels Sing, as well as fragments of assorted other seasonal tunes, this selection should bring a smile to the face of even the most committed Scrooge. The combining of all the elements at the climax is an inspired touch that ends this cheerful seasonal novelty with a bang!

At Sight is a particularly breezy example of the Bennett style, and Larry Clark's respectful and adroit young band arrangement is a real winner. The light-hearted and tuneful character of this little gem is a wonderful way to teach young musicians the joys of the March style and form.

He makes striking and effective use of the low brass and percussion, but the woodwinds are also given a lovely, lyrical idea in the contrasting middle section.
