The Rite of Spring, Movements I and II
(I. Introduction - A Kiss of the Earth; II - Dance of the Young Maidens) By Igor Stravinsky
Arranged by David Dutkanicz
Carl Fischer Music
On May 29, 1913, an over-capacity audience in Paris’ Théâtre des Champs-Élysées witnessed an historical spectacle as they became a brute catalyst in the most (in)famous opening night of the twentieth century. The Rite of Spring premiered that evening in the midst of a riot, inspired by the overwhelming primitivism both onstage and in the score. One hundred-plus years later, the music still incites the senses. The ballet was first published in 1914 in a reduction for two pianos, and serves as a basis for this arrangement. This edition is presented in honor of the centennial of the ballet’s premiere, and is intended to give soloists and accompanists a chance to perform two movements from this monumental work. The movements can be performed separately, and the first movement can be played as a solo without piano accompaniment. For advanced players.

The Dauverné Solo Collection for Trumpet
from Collection de VI Solos pour la Trompette Chromatique By François Georges Auguste Davuverné
Compiled and edited by Ronnie Ingle
Trumpet
Carl Fischer Music
WF125 — Book and CD — $19.99
This collection of solos composed by François Dauverné is unique in that they are among the very first solos ever written for the valved trumpet, culled from Collection de VI Solos pour la Trompette Chromatique. The collection comes with a CD that contains piano accompaniments as MP3 files and as printable PDFs, as well as printable PDFs of Trumpet in C parts.
Dauverné was the first trumpet teacher at the famed Paris Conservatory and maintained that post for thirty-five years. He was also the teacher of such notable students as Jean-Baptiste Arban and Louis Saint-Jacome. As a performer, Dauverné was first trumpet in the Paris Opera Orchestra for over thirty years. Dauverné is credited for being one of the first individuals to play on the valved trumpet in a public performance, and convinced such composers as Berlioz, Rossini, and Meyerbeer to write for the instrument.
This collection of six solos was originally composed for solo trumpet and chamber orchestra. Associate Professor of Trumpet at the University of North Dakota, Ronnie Ingle has meticulously transcribed and edited these groundbreaking works for solo trumpet, and has made available here for the first time a modern edition for solo trumpet and piano. This is a collection that all trumpeters should have in their library.

Concerto for Trumpet By Lauren Bernofsky
Piano Reduction Edited by Tomoko Kanamaru
Balquhidder Music
BQ113 – Score and Solo Part - $19.95 See a page (JPG)
A faculty member at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, composer, teacher and performer Lauren Bernofsky wrote this work as her doctoral dissertation for Boston University. The composer decided to write for trumpet citing its clear, brilliant sound, but also with the desire to contribute a more "meaty" concerto to the trumpet’s library. In three movements, the composer attempts to create variety in the piece through different textures. Originally orchestrated for a classical-size orchestra with double winds and brass, the piano reduction was commissioned by trumpeter Mary L. Thornton as part of her doctoral dissertation project at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This work received its piano reduction premiere on July 28, 2001 in Madison, Wisconsin, with Mary Thornton as soloist, and its orchestral premiere on August 12, 2001 in Bergen, Norway, with Gary Peterson as so loist. Audio samples can be heard here, and an interview with the composer in the International Trumpet Guild Journal can be read here (PDF).

Dramatic Masterpieces for the Cornetist: Fantasies for Cornet and Piano

Fantasies de salon pour cornet a pistons et piano) Jean-Baptiste Arban
Cornet and Piano ( Book and CD)
Carl Fischer Music
WF72 • Book and CD • $24.95
Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825-1889) wrote and arranged over 300 pieces of music, with his cornet a pistons solos being the most important to trumpet and cornet players. After his death, much of his work fell into obscurity during the twentieth century. Rediscovering Arban’s masterful music was the motivation for compiling this collection of cornet pieces. Included pieces are: “Variations Brilliantes,” “Fantaisie brillante sur l’air populaire de Marlborough,” “Fantaisie brillante sur des motifs de La Cenerentola de Gioachino Rossini,” “Le Pre aux Clercs,” “Romance de Mignon de Ambroise Thomas,” among other brilliant works. This collection of solos represents a very important piece of Arban’s legacy. Includes a piano accompaniment audio CD for effective practice.
Renaissance Duets Compiled and Edited by W. Jonathan Gresham
Two Trumpets
Balquhidder Music
BQ116 – Performance Score - $11.95
The value of duets for teaching has long been established, and the pieces in this collection that predate 19th century traditional harmony provide another possibility for duet use. The simplicity of two-part Renaissance counterpoint has immediate appeal, but also provides a precise opportunity to focus on intonation, tone quality and attack. The duets often provide octaves and other open intervals for pitch adjustments as well as awareness of suspensions and cadential figures. W. Jonathan Gresham, Professor Emeritus of Northern Kentucky University, has compiled these thirty-two melodies and adjusted them for the modern trumpet. For intermediate players.

Complete Canzonets for Two Voices By Thomas Morley
Edited by Mark Dulin
Two Trumpets
Balquhidder Music
BQ119 • Performance Score • $11.95 See a Page
This volume contains the complete works from Thomas Morley’s First Book of Canzonets for Two Voices. They are comprised of nine instrumental fantasies and twelve pieces with lyrics that could have been sung, played on instruments or a combination of the two. The instrumental works were most likely played on viols or recorders. Mark Dulin has adapted these works for trumpet, and since the original works do not indicate dynamics, tempo markings or articulation, he has elected to exclude them here as well. Playing a few of these pieces as a suite would be excellent for performance, and they are also useful tools in studying intonation, imitation and early music performance. Click here to preview on the Balquhidder website.

Melodious Etudes for Trombone, Volume 2

Carl Fischer
O1595X - Book and CD - $19.99 See a page (JPG)
If you have played and studied the trombone, then it is likely you are familiar with the book commonly referred to as the “Rochut” book. In 1928, Joannes Rochut edited Melodious Etudes for Trombone, published by Carl Fischer Music. Rochut thoroughly selected and edited the wonderfully lyrical vocalises composed by master vocal pedagogue Marco Bordogni, and so the study of the trombone was forever changed. After more than 80 years, Carl Fischer Music editors decided it was time to give this long-established publication a fresh new look. We asked the renowned trombonist and author Alan Raph to re-edit the book to fix errors that have existed since its inception. It was Raph’s intent, however, to preserve the important pedagogical sequence established by Rochut, while also taking this new edition one step further. Piano accompaniments have always existed for these delightful etudes and Mr. Raph has now made them part of this new edition. On the included CD, you will find PDF files of all of these piano accompaniments as well as superb MP3 recordings by pianist Rae Moses. With the inclusion of the piano accompaniments, the practice experience is greatly enhanced and the player can deepen their musical expression. This, along with painstakingly edited and re-engraved music, takes this seminal book into the twenty-first century. Every serious teacher and student of the trombone should have this new edition as part of their repertoire. For advancing players.

Ear Training for Trombone By David Vining
Trombone
Carl Fischer Music
WF83 • $14.95
Ear Training for Trombone is one of the first methods to integrate performance on the instrument with singing to enable the player to internalize the music. Written by David Vining, a leading brass educator with extensive orchestral, chamber, and solo performance experience, Ear Training for Trombone is a comprehensive and progressively organized method for improving the ear of students on any brass instrument. In turn, this brings marked improvement in tone, intonation, pitch accuracy, and musical understanding. The book contains more than 70 exercises in pitch, scales, arpeggios, and intervals, including melodious etudes and orchestral excerpts. A brass equivalent of the ear training method is long overdue, and this book is appropriate for not only young students, but brass students of all ages.

These essential collections for trombone and baritone technique have been adapted from two best-selling Carl Fischer Music trumpet publications of the same name. The trumpet versions were first released in 1923 as six small pamphlets, and have been used to teach lip flexibility and tonguing agility for 85 years with great success. In 2003, the pamphlets were combined into the top-selling Complete Shuebruk Lip and Tongue Trainers for Trumpet. Popular composer and Carl Fischer Music Editor-in-Chief Larry Clark has carefully edited these important methods for use by trombone and baritone students. The books will also work equally well as part of a study program on the tuba. The publications contain detailed instruction and etudes/exercises from Shuebruk, designed to build the musculature necessary to develop fast and accurate lip flexibility as well as quick, clean and crisp articulation. The Complete Shuebruk Lip and Tongue Trainers for Trombone/Baritone, along with the previously published books for trumpet, are a must for all serious students of brass instruments. This adaptation is long overdue and will be gladly welcomed by brass students and teachers alike.

Christopher Brubeck’s Prague Concerto was written in tribute to the Czech National Orchestra at their request after a performance of one of his first concertos, in which Brubeck was the soloist. This is a unique and quirky piece for bass trombone, covering a wide range of styles and rhythm, as evidenced by tempo markings like barbaro and bizarro. For the advanced player.

Hide and Seek By Imogen Heap
Arranged by Vicky Greenbaum
Seven Brass Instruments (Two Flugelhorns, Two Horns, Two Trombones and Tuba)
Balquhidder Music
BQ128 – Score and Parts - $19.95
Indie pop singer/songwriter Imogen Heap’s Hide and Seek has been inventively arranged by Vicky Greenbaum for small brass ensemble. A strikingly unique and contemporary song, its YouTube video has been viewed more than 4.7 million times. This arrangement is not technically difficult – but it does present musical challenges in terms of nuance and inflection. Trumpeters may use bucket mutes if flugelhorns are not available, but open trumpets would not be appropriate. This would be a unique piece for a brass recital and is also playable by advance high school students, who will no doubt greet it with enthusiasm. BQ131 - Score and Parts - $31.95 See a page (JPG)
Giovanni Gabrieli (c. 1555-1612), perhaps best known for his many published motets and instrumental canzoni, spent the majority of his career as organist at Venice’s Basilica San Marco. Sonata XVIII survives in the 1615 print Canzoni et Sonate (RISM G88), compiled and edited posthumously by a Father P. Thaddeo, Gabrieli’s confessor (likely assisted by Alvise Grani, who is credited with the same for Symphoniae Sacrae II). The work is scored for 3 choirs, with rubrics indicating the use of 4 cornetti and 10 tromboni. The present edition is based on a copy of RISM G88 located in the Staatsbibliothek Augsburg. All notes and accidentals are true to the print; ficta and optional ornamentation based on the treatises of Bassano and Dalla Casa are located above the staff. Substitute parts are available in PDF form from the publisher by request.
Scherza Amarilli e Clori By Giovanni Gabrieli
Transcribed by David Mathie
Six-Part Brass Ensemble
Balquhidder Music
BQ125 – Score and Parts - $16.95 See a page (JPG)
Scherza Amarilli e Clori was written in 1600 for the wedding of Gabrieli’s close friend Georg Gruber, a Tuscan nobleman. It was originally scored for a chorus of six voices: two sopranos, alto, tenor, baritone and bass voices. Unlike many of his works that were written for performance in Italy’s St. Mark’s Cathedral, this piece is not antiphonal in nature. This transcription was taken from the complete works (Giovani Gabrieli Opera Omnia, Volume XII: Madrigalia, edited by Denis Arnold, American Institute of Musicology, Hänssler-Verlag, 1974). Editorial additions have been kept to a minimum: the slurs were taken from the text, while the dynamics are suggested by both the text and texture of the music. Musical interpretations should bear in mind that the work is vocal in nature. Dur.: 3’
