The Rite of Spring, Movements I and II
(I. Introduction - A Kiss of the Earth; II - Dance of the Young Maidens) By Igor Stravinsky
Arranged by David Dutkanicz
Carl Fischer Music
On May 29, 1913, an over-capacity audience in Paris’ Théâtre des Champs-Élysées witnessed an historical spectacle as they became a brute catalyst in the most (in)famous opening night of the twentieth century. The Rite of Spring premiered that evening in the midst of a riot, inspired by the overwhelming primitivism both onstage and in the score. One hundred-plus years later, the music still incites the senses. The ballet was first published in 1914 in a reduction for two pianos, and serves as a basis for this arrangement. This edition is presented in honor of the centennial of the ballet’s premiere, and is intended to give soloists and accompanists a chance to perform two movements from this monumental work. The movements can be performed separately, and the first movement can be played as a solo without piano accompaniment. For advanced players.

The Spanish Album By Various Composers
Foreword and Compilation by Eric Wen
Violin and Piano
The Spanish Album represents classical music’s resurgence in Spain in the mid-nineteenth century, and the nationalistic emphasis of the Romantic era certainly provided fertile ground for the use of the unique sounds of the Iberian Peninsula. In the realm of violin music, Pablo de Sarasate’s compositions revealed Romantic Spain to much of the world and were inspirations for many other composers’ violin works in the same vein. Eric Wen has compiled a great representative survey of this musical period, and his foreword provides a lively and informative background for the pieces and composers in this book. Includes Camille Saint-Saëns’ Havanaise en mi majeur, Pablo de Sarasate’s Malagueña, José Aviles’ La Media noche, and 14 others.

Exercises for the Violin in Various Combinations of Double-Stops
Book with DVD By Roland Vamos
Foreword by Rachel Barton Pine
Violin
Carl Fischer Music
BF67 - $24.99
The most direct way to describe the essence of the concept and benefits of these exercises for the aspiring violinist is to simply quote one of its students, as well as the creator himself. From Rachel Barton Pine: “Vamos’s double-stop exercises fill a void in the literature of technical exercises for violinists and violists. Today there are many classic books with thirds, sixths, octaves, etc., by such composers as Schradieck, Ševĉik, Flesch, and Dounis. However, none of these wonderful collections features a systematic series of fixed double-stops that enables the aspiring violinist or violist to practice and master every possible combination of finger patterns across two strings without shifting.”
Dr. Roland Vamos also outlines the purpose of this method: “So what exactly do I hope the student that carefully studies these exercises will accomplish? Perhaps the most important accomplishment is the development of a strong left hand that is set up so that the fingers rise and drop consistently landing on the same part of the finger. The first joint of each will hopefully develop strength and flexibility while the thumb gently supports the side of the neck without tension. These exercises, when practiced slowly and carefully, should also help to develop a keen sense of pitch and intonation.” For intermediate players.

Josephine, the Singer By Martin Bresnick
Solo Violin
Carl Fischer Music
B3449 - $12.99 See a page (JPG)
Josephine (the Singer) takes its title from Franz Kafka’s last published story, Josephine the Singer or the Mouse People. This valedictory tale was Kafka’s prescient meditation both on musical divas and on what he considered might be the future of the Jews as a persecuted minority in Europe in the twentieth century. Bresnick’s composition is an extended passacaglia on a subject derived from Bresnick’s earlier work, Songs of the Mouse People. This subject itself is found to be consistent with the narrow intervals employed in most mouse melodies. Josephine (the Singer) was commissioned by the International Max Rostal competition in Berlin as the required solo composition for violin. For advanced players.

This collection is dedicated to the legacy of Pablo Casals and comprises ten pieces that he often performed throughout his extensive career. His great love of Bach is reflected by his arrangements of the Adagio from the Toccata in C Major for organ, and the Chorale Prelude from Jesu, meine Freude. The great Catalan-Spanish tradition from which he came speaks out in the Intermezzo from Granados’ opera Goyescas and Casals’ own Cant dell Ocells (Song of the Birds). Two other pieces in this collection, Mazurka in G minor and Vito, were composed by David Popper, who is remembered today as the leader of the Hungarian school of cello playing. Casals often played many of these virtuoso pieces for the cello as encores on his programs. The ten pieces in this collection contain updated fingerings and bowings, and the book also features rarely-seen photos of Casals himself. For intermediate to advanced players.

Flux By Jason Eckardt
Alto Flute and Violoncello

MXE28F - Score - $23.95 See sample pages (PDF)
The composer's website offers a good deal of information about his works. From program notes ("As the title suggests, Flux is in a perpetual state of transformation. Although there are passing moments of relative stability, the music never finds lasting repose.") to audio samples, Flux is revealed as an homage to Elliott Carter, using the full range and textures of the instruments. For advanced performers. Dur.: 6'
A Way [tracing] By Jason Eckardt
Solo Cello
Carl Fischer Music
B3443 - Score - $17.95 See sample pages (PDF)
This solo from Jason Eckardt offers a fascinating examination of the composer's works. Certainly for masters of their instrument, A Way [tracing] uses all of the skills of the performer and capabilities of the instrument in unique settings. The score represents a study of Eckardt's cutting-edge compositional style. For advanced performers.
Allan Kozinn, The New York Times: "Jason Eckardt clearly rejects the argument, made with increasing frequency, that the mid-20th-century atonalists were working toward a musical dead end. Harmonically and rhythmically his music thrives on complex, constantly changing relationships, but like many composers under 40 (he was born in 1971) he tempers the more prickly, jagged elements of the post-tonal style with humor and eclecticism. What holds your attention in his music is not its ingenuity but its relentless energy and drive."

Mastering the Bow, Part I - Studies for Bass
Based on the violin studies of Franz Wohlfahrt
Edited by Gaelen McCormick
Foreword by Jeffrey Turner
String Bass
The goal of this book is to help bassists expand their tonal vocabularies: to learn to make a wide variety of colors and shapes with music. The left hand makes no sound; it is the bow that creates articulations, rhythms, and rises and falls within a phrase. Using the famous Franz Wohlfahrt Studies for Violin as the basis, Gaelen McCormick has selected and edited these etudes to teach and reinforce bowing techniques for the bass. Quite simply, there is no other book out there for string bass players that addresses bow technique in this manner, and Mastering the Bow will greatly enhance the pedagogical repertoire for the instruction of the bass. All bassists should have this as part of their study materials. For beginning to intermediate players.

Audition By Jon Deak

Going Home (Vysoke, My Jerusalem) By Martin Bresnick
Oboe Quartet (Oboe, Violin, Viola, Cello)
Carl Fischer Music
MXE36 – Score and Parts - $24.99 See a page (JPG)
Martin Bresnick began playing the oboe at the age of eleven and performed seriously throughout graduate school, and was delighted to be invited to write an oboe quartet for the group Double Entendre. It became an unexpected journey into his family’s past. From the composer: “Delighted to receive a commission to write an oboe quartet for Double Entendre, I was pleased at the thought I would find myself ‘Going Home’ (with a glancing reference to the great English horn melody of Dvorák); I intended to take a gentle musical journey back to my youthful studies and beloved instrument. Instead, without willing it, I was taken back to childhood memories of my mother and my grandparents; to their songs and stories of ‘Vysoke Litovsk,’ the small Russian-Polish (now Belarussian) town where they and my ancestors had lived for many generations. I was taken back to memories of my own visit to Vysoke in 1995. Just as my mother and grandparents remembered, I found the dense birch and pine forests, the small railway station and the Potocki estate. The Catholic Church, just being restored, stood not far from the brilliant blue and gold-onion domes of the Orthodox Church. And, as they remembered, the Pulwa river (a tributary of the Bug river) ran beside the lunke or meadow. Goats and horses were grazing there, tethered to the green grass. The ruined synagogue, at the edge of the meadow, was just a short distance down an unpaved dirt road that led to a small wooden house, once the home of my family.” For advanced players.
The Muse of Distraction By Joshua Green
Clarinet, Cello and Piano
Carl Fischer Music
MXE19 – Set of Parts - $24.95
Winner of the 2009 MTNA Composition Competition, promising young composer Joshua Green gives us a striking new work for clarinet, cello and piano, borne of an unlikely muse. According to the composer:
"For the better part of three months I fought an exasperating battle. While trying to compose a piece for clarinet, cello, and piano, a plethora of distractions had consumed my mind. This frustration seemed to amplify with the amount of time that passed. It was then that the following quotation came to my attention: ‘Life does not consist mainly, or even largely of facts and happenings. It consists mainly of the storm of thoughts that is forever flowing through one’s head.’ —Mark Twain. And so The Muse of Distraction was born. Rather than trying to fight the 'storm of thoughts,' I allowed myself to compose a piece that embraced the frustration and irritation of those previous three months. Eventually these distractions were no longer my adversary. They became my muse.”
For advanced players.
