BOOKS IN A SERIES for Woodwinds
The Rite of Spring, Movements I and II
(I. Introduction - A Kiss of the Earth; II - Dance of the Young Maidens) By Igor Stravinsky
Arranged by David Dutkanicz
Carl Fischer Music
On May 29, 1913, an over-capacity audience in Paris’ Théâtre des Champs-Élysées witnessed an historical spectacle as they became a brute catalyst in the most (in)famous opening night of the twentieth century. The Rite of Spring premiered that evening in the midst of a riot, inspired by the overwhelming primitivism both onstage and in the score. One hundred-plus years later, the music still incites the senses. The ballet was first published in 1914 in a reduction for two pianos, and serves as a basis for this arrangement. This edition is presented in honor of the centennial of the ballet’s premiere, and is intended to give soloists and accompanists a chance to perform two movements from this monumental work. The movements can be performed separately, and the first movement can be played as a solo without piano accompaniment. For advanced players.

The New Rose Studies for Flute Edited by Amy Porter
Piano Accompaniments Composed and Performed by John Parker
Flute with CD
Carl Fischer Music
WF119 - $16.95 See a page (JPG)
Master flutist Amy Porter has reworked the famous etudes of Cyrille Rose for flute, allowing students of the instrument to reap the rewards of pieces that have benefited clarinetists for generations. As these etudes were written for the range of the clarinet and based on the range of Ferling’s oboe etudes, Porter has raised the octave placement in some exercises to make them more suited for all the octaves of the modern flute. This edition also includes a data CD containing piano accompaniments written and performed by John Walker in both MP3 and printable PDF format. In this form, the Rose etudes will become as essential to flute students as they are to clarinetists, as both practice and recital pieces.

24 Progressive Studies for the Flute, Op. 33 By Joachim Andersen
Annotated by Charles DeLaney
Edited by Eva Amsler
Carl Fischer Music
WF84 • $9.95
Carl Fischer Music presents a new spin on a classic teaching method with this edition of Joachim Andersen’s 24 Progressive Studies for the Flute, Op. 33. While all of the original etudes are included, flute pedagogue Professor Charles DeLaney has expanded them to include notes in the upper range of the instrument, updating this book for the flute’s modern incarnation. DeLaney also lends his sharp wit to this edition, having cleverly named the etudes and also has provided helpful and humorous practice notes for each. As a special bonus, this book also features “DeLaney’s Daily Dozen,” a set of practice exercises guaranteed to improve technique and musicality. Essentially a complete method built on a proven collection of etudes, Delaney’s edition of 24 Progressive Studies for the Flute, Op. 33 is absolutely essential for serious flute students. For intermediate to advanced players.

Pan Penseroso By Martin Bresnick
Two Flutes and Piano
Carl Fischer Music
W2651 — $29.95 See a page (JPG)
Written for master flutist Robert Dick, Pan Penseroso includes a number of procedures explored in his pioneering book The Other Flute: A Performance Manual of Contemporary Techniques. Originally written for one flute, Bresnick created a two-flute version in order to make the piece accessible to a greater variety of players. This work is presented in three movements, each of which takes its title from John Milton’s poem Il Penseroso (The Contemplative Man). The music aligns itself with this response to the poets earlier L’Allegro (The Cheerful Man). Orchestra version available on rental. Dur.: 24’
Variations on "Time and Time Again" By Sebastian Currier
Flute and Piano
Carl Fischer Music
W2562 — Score and Part — $19.95 See a page (JPG)
In his Variations on “Time and Time Again,” Currier upends the typical theme-and-variations genre, with melodic and harmonic cells or fragments appearing during the course of the four interconnected variations. For most of the piece, the theme seems almost like a mirage, just imagined or hinted; re-interpreted before the fact, as it were. The theme finally appears near the end of the work, and turns out to be a languid, richly-harmonized bluesy ballad Currier has called “Time and Time Again.” For advanced players.

Going Home (Vysoke, My Jerusalem) By Martin Bresnick
Oboe Quartet (Oboe, Violin, Viola, Cello)
Carl Fischer Music
MXE36 – Score and Parts - $24.99 See a page (JPG)
Martin Bresnick began playing the oboe at the age of eleven and performed seriously throughout graduate school, and was delighted to be invited to write an oboe quartet for the group Double Entendre. It became an unexpected journey into his family’s past. From the composer: “Delighted to receive a commission to write an oboe quartet for Double Entendre, I was pleased at the thought I would find myself ‘Going Home’ (with a glancing reference to the great English horn melody of Dvorák); I intended to take a gentle musical journey back to my youthful studies and beloved instrument. Instead, without willing it, I was taken back to childhood memories of my mother and my grandparents; to their songs and stories of ‘Vysoke Litovsk,’ the small Russian-Polish (now Belarussian) town where they and my ancestors had lived for many generations. I was taken back to memories of my own visit to Vysoke in 1995. Just as my mother and grandparents remembered, I found the dense birch and pine forests, the small railway station and the Potocki estate. The Catholic Church, just being restored, stood not far from the brilliant blue and gold-onion domes of the Orthodox Church. And, as they remembered, the Pulwa river (a tributary of the Bug river) ran beside the lunke or meadow. Goats and horses were grazing there, tethered to the green grass. The ruined synagogue, at the edge of the meadow, was just a short distance down an unpaved dirt road that led to a small wooden house, once the home of my family.” For advanced players.

32 Rose Etudes for Clarinet Book w/CD By Cyrille Rose

Carl Fischer Music
WF85 • $12.95
Carl Fischer Music’s best-selling 32 Rose Etudes for Clarinet has been given a fresh new look and added value with a gorgeous new cover and CD containing not only MP3 piano accompaniment tracks composed and recorded by John Walker, but also printable PDFs for all 32 piano accompaniments. Meticulously revised and edited by clarinetist Melvin Warner, this edition contains valuable insight into both the original author Cyrille Rose and Franz Wilhelm Ferling, on whose music the Rose studies were based. Parker’s accompaniments further enhance the musical quality of these etudes while making practice and performance more meaningful. Many of these beautiful, melodic etudes are perfect for recital use as well. With this new edition, a classic and trusted method becomes all the more indispensable.

32 Rose Etudes
Melvin Warner, Editor
Piano Accompaniments by John Walker
Carl Fischer, New York, 2009, $12.95
This is the must-have etude book of the year. Not only is the definitive edition of the 32 Rose Etudes reprinted from Carl Fischer’s 2002 edition, but clarinetists now have lovely arrangements, with piano accompaniment, of all the etudes thanks to the imagination and skill of pianist John Walker. Walker, Distinguished Artist in Residence at South Dakota State University, has composed idiomatic accompaniments that sound as if they were originally conceived by Ferling/Rose. The clarinet and piano settings follow in the tradition of previous composers such as André Petiot, Paul Jeanjean, and Jan Bach who also composed accompaniments for the etudes.
Carl Fischer provides the well-known clarinet etudes printed in the customary solo format. Also included is a CD with 116 pages of printable PDF files of the clarinet/piano scores and MP3 files of John Walker performing the piano accompaniments. Load the CD into your computer or CD player and away you go, instant accompaniment for your clarinet. Walker’s piano accompaniments are interesting texturally and harmonically.
These are short recital-level pieces from which clarinet students will grow musically. All in all, this volume is beautifully done. Also check John Walker’s Web site for a recording of the Rose Etudes for clarinet and piano and Brahms Intermezzo arrangements. www.roseetudes.com

The Muse of Distraction By Joshua Green
Clarinet, Cello and Piano
Carl Fischer Music
MXE19 – Set of Parts - $24.95
Winner of the 2009 MTNA Composition Competition, promising young composer Joshua Green gives us a striking new work for clarinet, cello and piano, borne of an unlikely muse. According to the composer:
"For the better part of three months I fought an exasperating battle. While trying to compose a piece for clarinet, cello, and piano, a plethora of distractions had consumed my mind. This frustration seemed to amplify with the amount of time that passed. It was then that the following quotation came to my attention: ‘Life does not consist mainly, or even largely of facts and happenings. It consists mainly of the storm of thoughts that is forever flowing through one’s head.’ —Mark Twain. And so The Muse of Distraction was born. Rather than trying to fight the 'storm of thoughts,' I allowed myself to compose a piece that embraced the frustration and irritation of those previous three months. Eventually these distractions were no longer my adversary. They became my muse.”

Clarinet Part - CY3128P - $19.50
Set of score and parts available on rental
The full score and solo parts for David Maslanka’s Desert Roads for clarinet and wind ensemble are now available on custom print. Maslanka on this work: “The title Desert Roads suggests an interior journey, a time of inner searching, of not knowing, of creative incubation. I have chosen to call these four movements ‘songs’ for clarinet and wind ensemble. This connects them directly to the romantic idea of ‘songs without words’…because of my longtime and persistent use of chorale melodies, it has been suggested that I am somehow proselytizing for the Christian faith. This is not the case. My attraction to these melodies is that they are the product of countless generations of human seeking, and have about them an aura of depth and power. The word ‘book’ gives the feeling of a larger collection of material, something extensive and varied, and something that may have a story to tell.”

Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble By David Maslanka
Alto Saxophone and Piano reduction
Carl Fischer Music
W2652 - Solo part with piano reduction - $29.99
Y3321 - Parts (rental only)
David Maslanka’s concerto for alto saxophone and wind ensemble in five movements was premiered in March of 2000 by the University of Arizona Symphonic Wind Ensemble, conducted by Gregg Hanson, conductor and featuring Joseph Lulloff, solo saxophone. From the composer: “This concerto turned out to be a good deal larger than I would reasonably want. As I got into the composing, the ideas became insistent: none of them would be left out! The format of ‘Songs and Interludes’ arises from my other recent works for saxophones (‘Mountain Roads’ for saxophone quartet and ‘Song Book’ for alto saxophone and marimba) and suggests a music that is more intimate than symphonic. There is a strong spiritual overtone with quotes from Bach chorales, and from my own works ‘Hell’s Gate’ and ‘Mass.’ A story is hinted at which has the Crucifixion right smack in the middle – the climax of the third movement quotes the ‘Crucifixus’ from the ‘Mass.’ I don’t know what the story is, only that it wants to be music, and not words.”

WE15 - Score and Parts - $24.99
Paradigm Lost is in one continuous movement and explores the contrast between quiet, delicate, recessive music, and more aggressive takes on what, down deep, is similar material. The attempts to resolve these different takes, or the failure to resolve them, are at the heart of the piece. As the music progresses, the quartet divides into various duo and solo/trio combinations in which the recurring thematic materials are heard in changing contexts. Paradigm Lost is dedicated with enthusiasm and respect to the Prism Quartet. Dur.: 12’

Carl Fischer Music
WE8 – Score and Parts $24.95
WE8F – Full Score $9.95
Carl Fischer Music Editor-in-Chief and veteran composer Larry Clark has penned a beautiful quintet for winds, commissioned by the Ars Nova Quintet at James Madison University in 1991, where it was premiered. Quartal and quintal harmonies are the driving force behind this piece in three movements; each exploring a different style. “Frolic” is inspired by Stravinsky’s use of stacked fifths, “Song” is melancholy and thoughtful, and “Rondo” goes out with a bang, loosely following the rondo format and ending soundly in F major. For advanced players.

"Mr. Eckardt's language is at once sophisticated and simple." (Paul Griffiths, The New York Times) "...Exploded like spontaneous combustion, pushing the instrument to its extremes with pungent dissonances, improvisatory rhythms remarkably cued with the ensemble and an often spread-eagled virtuosic technique." (Jane Vranish, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) "...Alternating tough angular lyricism... with an exploration of extreme register as chunky and funky as mid 70s Ligeti" (Dan Warburton, Paris Transatlantic) "...It is all music which grabs and holds attention, and makes you want to play the pieces again to get closer to the composer's mind and procedures." (Peter Grahame Woolf, Musical Pointers) Critics love music of complexity and thought, and Eckardt's is a favorite. His A Glimpse Retraced appears on the Mode Records album Jason Eckardt: Out of Chaos, with the marvelous pianist Marilyn Nonken and Ensemble 21. For advanced performers. Dur.: c. 14'
