CONCERT PERFORMANCE SERIES (Medium Easy) (Green Cover)
The Billboard March John N. Klohr (1869-1956), was a prolific composer of marches, whose primary claim to fame is this classic march. The first two strains of this lively piece are delightful, but the acclaim of this march rests on the instant recognizability of the trio theme, used for years as an introduction to countless entertainment acts of every sort. Andrew Balent's version of this beloved selection is well adapted to the capabilities of high school musicians and the result will be great fun for them to play.

Dimensions Dimensions is a wonderful show piece for a moderately advanced band and a lesson in musical economy, as Compello derives much of the content of the piece from the oscillating minor third of his opening trumpet tune. Harmonically rich and rhythmically propulsive, it can be programmed as a concert overture or as an effective and dramatic concert finale. The scoring is especially brilliant and will make the band shine to great effect.

Holiday Ornaments A rousing and sensationally well-scored fantasy on "I Saw Three Ships," Holiday Ornaments will certainly be a highlight of the Christmas program it "ornaments." Using fragments of "Joy To the World," Sean O'Loughlin has created a splendid concert work that also serves as a great way to help young players master playing in compound time (6/8 in this instance). The variants the composer creates on the well-known tune put the players of the entire band (including the piccolo player) through their paces to great and colorful effect.

Intermezzo Sinfonico from the Opera Cavalleria Rusticana The Intermezzo from Mascagni's prize-winning one act opera is probably one of the best known of all classical selections. Del Borgo has beautifully scored the sostenuto opening for the woodwind section, reserving most of the brass for the presentation of the familiar tune at measure 20. The scoring of this memorable theme is truly sumptuous. This is a superb setting of a classic instrumental excerpt from a great opera, and perfect piece for reinforcing the proper playing of a musical legato.

Nevada Expedition Mr. Silva's experience as a writer of music for films and television lends this wonderful score a technicolor polish. The classic "western" idiom is embedded in American musical consciousness and Nevada Expedition wonderfully exploits this idiom. The lively syncopated rhythms and brash scoring will keep the band on its toes and the rousing and exciting music will probably bring the audience to its feet, cheering!

Tribal Quest A solemn opening sets the stage for a lively, rhythmically charged allegro (marked "Tribal Groove"), based on the slow opening theme. The percussion writing and use of hand clapping by the rest of the band suggest a primitive ritual. A slow central section introduces a gorgeously expressive theme for the lead alto saxophone, which is given ample time to expand as it is passed around the wind section and ultimately played by the full band in a richly scored climax. The opening material returns and drives toward the climactic, passionate return of the theme from the middle section. This piece is a knockout that will really engage the full attention of young players.

Tribute From the broad opening, through the spritely woodwind writing of the main allegro ("Lightly and playfully"), to low the brass chorale (accompanied by snare drum), Carl Strommen exploits the capabilities of the ensemble with great skill and evident enthusiasm. The careful contrasts of sonorities and occasional use of mixed meters and syncopation will give the ensemble a chance to test its mettle in a piece of real music substance.
