I composed my Concerto for Four Percussion Soloists and Orchestra in October, 1964, at the Huntington Hartford Foundation. The Foundation had given me a fellowship to spend a month there to complete my "American Carnival Overture" and to edit my "Concerto Grosso" for its recording by the Louisville Orchestra. The circumstances were so conducive that I fulfilled these intentions in a little over a week. A percussion concerto had been on my mind for some time, so I decided to get started on it. The piece was finished October 13.

What I am trying to do is to give the percussion players, at long last, an opportunity to express their musical selves, something which has hitherto been impossible because there is no body of literature such as exists for all the other instruments ? no sonatas, no quartets, no trios. The concerto is dedicated to the memory of Edgar Var
