Quick Overview

"Fables" was commissioned by the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation at The Library of Congress for The New York Chamber Soloists who premiered the work at The Library in 1975. The group has also performed the work at Dumbarton Oaks, Caramoor, and on a State Department-sponsored tour of South America. Among other companies which have produced "Fables" are Central City Opera, Evenings On The Roof at the L.A. County Museum, and the Aspen Opera Center. Originally designed for four soloists (STTB) the work contains thirty roles; this allows a music director much latitude in deciding how many singers to use in a given production. Although the piece was conceived as a whole, and is best performed in its entirety, it may be successfully excerpted, not necessarily presenting all ten fables.
