Quick Overview

Having written a great number of works of abstract quality in which there is no special reference to anything but the music itself, I was interested to see what would happen if I let my musical ideas grow out of a feeling that arises from seeing a play, reading a novel, looking at a painting.

The furthest thing from my mind would be to depict, or try to get a musical equivalent of the work that started me off. This has nothing to do with 'program music.' As Beethoven once put it, 'Mehr Empfindung als Malerei' - 'more feeling than depiction.' I often write music to a poem, making a song or choral piece; why not write about some other kind of art that I've enjoyed or reacted to strongly? Obviously the music then has to stand on its own feet and exist almost without reference to the original stimulus. Of course, there may be some inner connection.

I haven't the slightest talent for painting, but love it all the more for that.
