Quick Overview

The descriptive titles given to these chamber ensemble pieces are fleeting glimpses - a series of "flights-of-fancy" - that range from the dramatic (Nos. 1, 5 & 8), the sedate (Nos. 2 & 7) and the more sober
(Nos. 4 & 9) through to the playful (Nos. 3, 6 & 10). As is often true in literature, some "materials" recur
in the contrasting tales - even pure repetition - but their individual characteristics vary widely.
Only four of the pieces utilize the full ensemble; the remainder are set for smaller quintets and
sextets. The work is scored for piano quartet, flute and clarinet, doubling alto flute and bass
clarinet, and an extensive percussion palette including (to name only a few) quijada, ratchet,
vibra-slap, cowbell, reco-reco and sandblocks along with the more standard instruments.
SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED is roughly 23 minutes in duration. It was written for seven
performing colleagues at the School of Music of Stetson University, Deland, Florida and composed
from November 2009 to March 2010 in Ormond-by-the-Sea, Florida.
