Tone colours, intensity and transparency even seem to be intensified by the instrumentation.

Odd Moments was written for the Da Capo Chamber Players in 1999 in celebration of George Perle’s 85th birthday. The piece was revised in 2009, resulting in a version that is a few minutes shorter. The title of the piece obliquely refers to Perle’s late piece Critical Moments, and also to an aspect of Perle’s system of 12-tone tonality, which distinguishes between odd and even harmonies. With subtle timbral shifts, frequent metric changes, and an ingenious use of unison and octave unison throughout, this piece is a sophisticated yet playful addition to the modified Pierrot ensemble literature.

The Trio for Flute, Viola and Guitar is in two movements. "Light Through the Trees” opens with a simple folk-like melody, utilizing the overtones and open sonorities of the guitar. It develops as a dialogue between viola and flute, alternating between 5/8 and 3/4, creating a distinct polyphonic texture. The “Samatureya” movement starts with a violent unison that will later be incorporated into the thematic material of the whole piece. A Brazilian samba rhythm is quoted prominently in the guitar part. Concluding the piece is an evocative return to the introduction of the first movement.

The name “Samatureya” has no literal meaning and owes its creation to a game that I play with my granddaughter, making up words. In considering the overall feeling of the music, and what might follow “Light Through the Trees”, the name “Samatureya" suddenly appeared in my imagination, and felt exactly right.

Originally composed for solo organ, Hailstork’s fanfare is a 3½-minute explosion of joyous sound inspired by the Baroque-era tradition of Chorale Preludes. As in Bach’s organ preludes, the familiar hymn’s phrases broadly emerge from ornate counterpoint, here in the form of brass fanfares. The result is exhilarating! Also scored by Hailstork for chamber ensemble and for orchestra, FANFARE ON AMAZING GRACE was transcribed for concert band in January 2021 by MGySgt Don Patterson, staff arranger for “The President’s Own” United States Military Band, for that ensemble’s worldwide broadcast performance at the 2021 Presidential Inauguration.

Sea shanties (or chanties) are songs sung by sailors to keep them synchronized (and mentally interested) while doing the hard labor of sailing. "Paddy Lay Back" is a capstan shanty, a capstan being a vertically-axled rotating machine used to raise and lower a ship's anchor. Sailors would rotate the capstan by pushing poles radiating from it, with three or four men working a pole. The song would help them keep momentum; if not, something could slip. Ulysses Kay favored neoclassical tendencies in his works, featuring lyricism, contrapuntal textures, clear formal designs and a tonal, yet chromatic harmonic vocabulary, all of which are evident in his approachable and elegant String Triptych from 1988. Composed for the Missouri All-State High School String Orchestra, the piece features three contrasting movements, identified as “Lyric, “Cadence,” and “Finale.” Ulysses Kay was a prolific composer, mentored by such distinguished pedagogues as William Grant Still, Howard Hanson, Paul Hindemith and Bernard Rogers. His numerous honors and awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, an American Prix de Rome prize and a Fulbright Scholarship for studies in Europe, and honorary doctorates from Lincoln College, Bucknell University, the University of Arizona and Illinois Wesleyan University.
