Harris rose to prominence between the World Wars, with his greatest success in his Symphony No. 3 (1939). Ten years later, he had composed a Violin Concerto for Joseph Gingold and the Cleveland Orchestra, but the premiere was necessarily postponed when multiple errors were discovered between score and parts. The Concerto would not see its first performance until 1984, when Gregory Fulkerson and the North Carolina Symphony brought it to light. Fulkerson would record the Concerto the following year with the Louisville Orchestra. David Hurwitz reviews that recording, referring to the Concerto as, "an impressive and truly individual piece that shows the composer working at the very top of his form. For my money, this is a far more impressive piece than, say, Barber's delightful and deservedly popular concerto, and it strikes me as standing an excellent chance of making a strong impression in concert."
