Autumn Lute-Song

Quick Overview

Singing is a great passion of mine and therefore writing songful music is very natural to me. In this piece, I use sounds and gestures from my childhood. There is an inherent pentatonicism in the pitch structure as well as pizzicato and muted bowed sounds which echo the timbre of the Pi-pa and Er-hu, two Chinese stringed instruments. At times, I transform the whole ensemble into a giant lute! The piece is perhaps at its most cantabile and melancholic at the end, with fragments of misty tunes weaving in and out of the texture.
