Quick Overview

"Fiesta!" Is the fourth and final movement of my "Millennium Dances" for Symphony Orchestra and Solo Percussion, which was commissioned and premiered by the San Diego Symphony under the direction of Jung-Ho Pak, Artistic Director. Each movement of "Millennium Dances" features stylized idioms evoking various world cultures ? Irish, Balinese, and African ? as perceived through a decidedly American filter. Authentic native instruments and percussion are used intrinsically throughout.

The conductor and I both felt that it would be fun and appropriate to add another movement that might sum up the whole suite while adding still another perspective, so I eagerly accepted his invitation to write another movement as a stand-alone piece that would ultimately take its place as a ?grand finale? to the other three movements.

"Fiesta!" Is the result of this invitation, which specifically included the possibility of working with the percussion virtuoso Steven Schick, who had already been booked for the concert and appeared as soloist on marimba and floor drums in the premiere performance on April 27, 2002. "Fiesta!" completes our musical world tour, landing much closer to home this time in a finale that draws on Latin-American dance rhythms while also quoting briefly from some of the themes in the three earlier movements.
My percussion consultants on this project, who contributed many useful suggestions, were John Flood, Danlee Mitchell, Mark Lamson, Jim Plank (on drumset), and of course Steven Schick.
