Quick Overview

in just- spring is an overture inspired by the poem ?Chanson Innocent? by e.e. cummings. The work was commissioned by the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra in honor of Joseph Primavera?s thirty-year leadership of the organization. It is dedicated to him and his dynamic leadership and inspired music-making with the orchestra during these years. in just-spring was written during the summer of 1984 and is one continuous movement divided into two clear sections. The slow opening reveals the entire harmonic and melodic material of the work with short references to the chant which, in the next section, is often repeated and eventually becomes the major focus for the fast section. After this roughly two-and-a-half minute introduction, the orchestra breaks into a never-ending celebration of the ecstasy, which seems to pervade the entire universe at the thought of the spring. The image of the balloon man and his free-flying wares is conjured up by the driving yet not always regular flow, constantly interrupted by a very simple chant-like song, which varies in length each time it recurs. Everything in the world seems to be jumping, whistling, and shouting ?wee? as that great time of year gives all humankind cause to celebrate once more.
When I was commissioned to write this work, I felt that the subject should be related to spring. This was not only for obvious reasons of equivalency but because the more I thought about Joseph Primavera?s accomplishments and the great joy and meaning he has brought into so many lives the clearer my mission became. I hope, therefore, this work will convey the exuberance and fulfillment which music can provide and with which this man?s music-making has changed so many young lives for the better.
