Quick Overview

?The Confidence Man? is an opera which was commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera and produced in the summer of 1982 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The libretto, written by my wife Gene Rochberg, is based on the 1857 novel of the same name by Herman Melville ? a novel whose ideas go the heart of the dark side of the American psyche and are, to my likes even more true today than they were when Melville published his book.

The novel and the opera turn out to be about the bust-up of the American dream, while the band plays on and movies of illusionary hope flicker on the silver screen.

In adapting the work from opera into orchestral suite, I realized what serves well in one medium often requires major and/ or minor adjustments and rewriting to satisfy the conditions of another genre.
