Songs of the Open Road

Five Inspirations from Walt Whitman

Daniel Dorff

Theodore Presser Company

Flute

114-42363 - $11.99

See Inside (JPG)

Whitman’s epic “Song of the Open Road” is an inspiring metaphor encouraging us to find and explore our own paths, free of anchors or artificial boundaries. Dorff uses 5 brief passages from the poem as movement titles, setting the stage for a suite of sometimes-edgy soliloquies in which the music (and the flutist) explores these open roads.

The Gibb DUO’s succinct movement titles (I. Here, II. Open, III. Stark, IV. Ardent) tease at revealing the grand and heartfelt inspiration for exuberant romanticism in this sonata-like work of symphonic proportions and depth. Gibb is both an accomplished pianist and an award-winning flutist, who has written of this compelling major addition to the literature: “This work is a journey. What journey and whose journey does not matter. It is my journey, it is your journey. It is the journey of those who came before us, and of those who will come after us. I wrote this hoping that we can find each other along the road, so we can realize that we don’t need to go on the journey alone.” Gibb’s DUO is sure to become a favorite major work for flute recitalists. Violin, Piano

114-42260 - Score and Parts - $16.99

Both deep and charming, LITTLE SUITE IN F combines Hailstork’s dry wit with heart, and modernism with nostalgic beauty. The suite’s four movements include a prelude of atypical texture and colors, a dance movement evoking waltz or menuet, a solemn solo movement for the violin alone, and finally a lullaby with a melody inspired by spirituals.

114-42357 - $14.99

One of the bravest and most potent calls to social action by one individual was the famous 1955 refusal by Rosa Parks to give up her bus seat, laying the groundwork for the ensuing civil rights movement. Hailstork’s title says it all, and his dramatically expressive work for solo viola declaims it all. Using a musical language that evokes action, blues, and power, along with a considerable infusion of contemplation and determination, ROSA PARKS SAID “NO” is a 9-minute instrumental monodrama perfect for any concert recital as well as special programming needs. The work's premiere by violist Philippe Chao may be heard at https://youtu.be/xHFJ-L-Bcxc

This theatrical miniature has carved a unique place in music literature, thanks to many warm hearts and minds. In 2005 the distinguished violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins started a project called Music Kitchen where the homeless and needy, after a meal provided by a soup kitchen, were treated to a concert performed by some of the best musicians in New York. After these concerts, Hall-Tompkins asked the listeners for comments. This became inspiration for Zwilich’s MUSIC KITCHEN INTERPLAY, which includes vocal settings of listeners’ comments in musical counterpoint with reworked fragments of her Fantasy for Solo Violin.

Practice Sequences for The Orchestral Trumpet

Michael Sachs

Theodore Presser Company

Trumpet in Bb

414-41228 - Methods - $29.99

See Inside (JPG)

Michael Sachs, Principal Trumpet of The Cleveland Orchestra since 1988, presents a compendium of practice sequences to woodshed and refine over 50 excerpts from the orchestral trumpet literature, from Bach through the modern masters.

PRACTICE SEQUENCES shows each original excerpt, followed by a progressive series of work routines to isolate a variety of building-block elements including intervals, rhythm, articulation, intonation, range, and dynamics. These practice sequences lead the performer to accurate facility and performance, while providing practice strategies that are applicable to any other challenging music beyond the examples in the book — a perfect companion to Sachs’ book THE ORCHESTRAL TRUMPET.

In this playful duet, master composer Samuel Adler spins out melodies with inexhaustible imagination. Amiable dialogue carries the listener from beginning to end, while shifting meters and unexpected harmonies keep the music fresh and surprising. The tender, rocking middle section is a welcome contrast before returning to the dance. For advanced performers.

Samuel Adler’s IMPROVISATION AND WALTZ delights performers and listeners by treating traditional genres in non-traditional ways. The familiar waltz rhythm is offset by carefully inserted bars of two, toying with expectations while retaining the dance’s underlying character. In the very free “improvisation” sections, Adler takes full advantage of the organ’s scope, creating broad swaths of slowly shifting harmony beneath the flute’s languid, searching lines. For advanced performers.

MUTUAL is a dreamy single-movement work for violin and piano that navigates numerous moods and textures in its seven-minute span with elegance and poise. At times, it is a showpiece for the violin; at others, a rich “song without words,” with both instruments engaged as equal partners. The real magic of the music is in its ability to shift freely between these distant worlds and bring them near to one another. For advanced performers.

Dark Mountains

Chen Yi

Theodore Presser Company

Harp

114-42396 - $13.99

Shadowy lines traced in fading colors suggest a mountain range in silhouette against the night sky in this mesmerizing and poetic miniature for solo harp. The composer takes the instrument’s full range as her canvas, carrying the listener’s imagination from distant peaks to shrouded foothills. Particularly memorable is a recurring tremolo motif  played with a wooden drumstick on the instrument’s lowest strings. DARK MOUNTAINS is artistically refined, but not virtuosic, making it a novel and approachable addition to the repertoire for developing and professional harpists alike.

“Spring Vitality,” the first movement of Chen Yi’s SONG OF SPRING for string quartet, embeds rhythmic speech in quietly churning fragments of polyphony to suggest the sounds of falling rain, sure to captivate audiences of all kinds. This expression of the gentler side of spring is contrasted with a stormy middle section, full of double stops and tremolos in driving rhythms. The second movement, “Earth Dance,” is lively and angular, combining elements from jazz and Beijing opera into a distinctive sonic palette. For advanced performers.

Aulos

for Solo Flute, 2 Horns, Percussion, and Strings

Ulysses Kay

Carl Fischer Music

Flute, Piano

PCB112 - $19.99

See Inside (JPG)

Commissioned by flutist John Solum and written in 1967, Aulos was premiered in 1971 by the Indiana University Chamber Orchestra, with John Solum acting as the soloist and Wolfgang Vaccano conducting. The work derives its name from the eponymous ancient Greek instrument, which was double-reeded and contained a two-piece pipe and finger holes. One piece contained a bag that allowed for a continuous sound, making it more akin to bagpipes than to the modern-day flute, while the other piece acted independently of the first. In Kay’s work, the texture of the supporting instruments act as the supporting, yet highly reactive drone, while the flute acts as the melodic piece. Originally scored for solo flute, 2 horns, percussion, and strings, the piano reduction of this acclaimed, haunting work has been made available for the first time through this new edition.

120 Etudes for Trumpet

Wilhelm Wurm (ed. Michael Sachs)

Carl Fischer Music

WF239 - Methods - $29.99

See Inside (JPG)

Wilhelm Wurm was one of the most important influences on the evolution of cornet/trumpet playing and teaching in the second half of the nineteenth century. Initially this collection of 120 etudes was in three separate books: 60 Etudes for Cornet á Piston or Trumpet, 40 Etudes for Cornet á Piston or Trumpet, and 20 Difficult Studies for Cornet á Piston or Trumpet (renamed here as 20 Advanced Studies for Cornet á Piston or Trumpet). Wurm adapted some of these etudes from existing studies, utilizing excerpts from Georg Kopprasch’s 60 Etudes for High Horn, Op.5 and 60 Etudes for Low Horn, Op. 6, Franz Wilhelm Ferling’s 48 Etudes for Oboe, Op. 31 and 18 Studies for Oboe, Op. 12, as well as Ernst Sachse’s 100 Etudes for Trumpet, in addition to using his own compositions in this collection. Wurm even borrowed from himself, using virtually the exact same notes for Etudes No. 2 and No. 34 in all but the last fifteen and five measures, respectively. Many of the etudes in this collection can also be used as transposition studies. Sachs has included suggested dynamics in his edition, while also encouraging exploration of tone color, style, note length, and character variations within the etudes. This collection serves as an indispensable tool for developing trumpet players, perfect for technical work in the studio and at home.

496-00138 - Study Score - $39.99

"Of Thee I Sing" was composed to mark the 25th anniversary of the April 19 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. At first, Leshnoff’s music depicts the fear and confusion of the event itself. When the chorus finally enters in the last third of the piece, Leshnoff uses the familiar tune of "My Country ‘Tis of Thee" as an ironic reflection on the tragedy. Leshnoff gradually transforms the tune, integrating it with the material that has come before and creating a conglomerate that tries to make sense of both tragedy and the human ability to persist in the face of it. By the end, with one last refrain of the tune and sedate sustained chords in the strings, some peace seems to have been achieved.

While Liszt made an almost literal transcription of the first piece, he gave the second and third pieces a much freer arrangement, in the style of concert paraphrases. The large-scale concert piece was premiered by Liszt and Chopin on Christmas Day 1834 in a salon in Paris. The Grand duo was not published in Liszt's lifetime, and has survived as a draft. This volume comes complete with a detailed preface in English, German, and Hungarian containing new research findings, several manuscript facsimiles, and a critical report in English.
