Soul Rejoicing opens with the stormy image of a band of horsemen riding fiercely in the darkness of a moonless night. Thus, with the sounds of pounding hooves and riders’ shouts, begins Perezvony (Chimes), Valery Gavrilin’s monumental multi-movement composition subtitled “On Reading V. Shukshyn Miracle Play—Choral Symphony.” Emotionally charged and rhythmically driven from the start, this movement continues to build with excitement and tension through Gavrilin’s brilliant use of choral texture, dynamics, and extended melodic lines. The text, written in the style of Russian folklore by the composer himself, doesn’t tell a story per se, rather it provides textual colors and strong images through many tongue-twisting, onomatopoeic word combinations such as “tuchi letuchie” (oppressive clouds), “slyozy solenye” (salty tears), “dushi palyonye” (scorched souls), etc. Dur.: 7’

Russian composer Valery Gavrilin (b. 1939, Volodga; d. 1999, St. Petersburg) completed his thirteen movement composition Chimes in 1982 and subtitled it “Upon Reading V. Shukshyn Miracle Play— Choral Symphony.” Scored for mixed chorus, narrator, percussion and solo oboe, this large choral fresco is deeply rooted in Russian folklore. Ti-Ri-Ri, the wordless movement #5, is a colorful and theatrical scene. One can almost see young men and women gathering (for a dance, perhaps), and as the voices enter one by one, the listener hears a different character from each vocal part. Dur.: 4’

Sharkova brings a third selection from Gavrilin's massive work Chimes to better choirs. Sunset Music features a consistent bell-like 5/4 rhythm in the lower voices, with a simple and lovely ringing melody in the higher range. The music builds to a forte clanging, before dying away into silence. Text is onomatopoeic syllables ("din don don" or a sustained "bom," etc.), and the optional (although recommended) oboe part is available as a free download: www.carlfischer.com/downloads.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you for the Part by Part section of your site. It is such a help to have part recordings, demo recordings and accompaniments available for my middle school choirs…I wish other publishers had this kind of foresight and willingness to help out music educators with this kind of service. From the bottom of my heart, thank you again!”

“Now choir members can practice on their own and come to rehearsal already knowing their parts! Especially for choirs with limited rehearsal time, this is an awesome learning tool!”

“Gee, I wish I’d known you offered free mp3’s, I’d have chosen all my school choir repertoire from your catalog. With your vocal track, part 1, part 2, and accompaniment track I saved 6+ hours of my time (and voice), plus the average $30 going price that other publishers charge for their ‘sound trax.’
