A long-established standard for low clarinets, IN A DEEP FUNK has been transcribed for low saxophones by the Australian virtuoso Yo-Yo Su. The work is modeled in concept after Bach’s cello suites, using contemporary dance rhythms. Yo-Yo Su’s adaptation takes rich advantage of the most idiomatic transpositions for saxophone, reaching into the altissimo with ossias for standard range. Double Concerto for Alto Saxophone, Tuba, and Wind Ensemble

Stacy Garrop

Theodore Presser Company

Solo Alto Saxophone in Eb, Solo Tuba, Piano

114-42421 - Score and Parts - $42.99

See Inside (JPG)

Inspired by an optical phenomenon only visible from high altitude mountains at dawn and dusk, this double concerto for alto saxophone and tuba by Stacy Garrop—whose music is esteemed and loved among wind players—traces the sun’s daily journey over such a peak. The solo parts accumulate virtuosic animation across the work’s three movements, and eventually settle into evening stillness, when, according to composer, the alpenglow is at its most radiant: “The earth’s atmosphere scatters the sun’s light, allowing only particular wavelengths through, and blanketing the mountains in rich hues of peach, pink, red, and purple.” A feast for the eyes becomes a feast for the ears for players and listeners alike in this imaginative and attractive work. (Wind ensemble score and parts available on rental, 115-40431.)

Always Tell the Truth

from Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed That Line to Freedom

Nkeiru Okoye

Theodore Presser Company

Tenor, Piano

111-40336 - $13.99

See Inside (JPG)

Knowing that he will be interrogated after his children disappear from the plantation, Harriet’s father Ben dons a blindfold as they make their escape plan. Why? Because Ben Ross has never told a lie, and will then be able to say truthfully that he didn’t see anything. This upbeat aria for tenor and piano from Nkeiru Okoye’s celebrated opera Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed that Line to Freedom paints a vivid picture of a man’s determination to keep true to his moral principles in the face of enormous oppression.

“John Tubman, stop your foolishness. You are a free man with a high woman eyeing you. What do you want to marry me for?” BROWN SKINNED GAL is John’s answer to that question from Harriet in Nkeiru Okoye’s celebrated opera Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed that Line to Freedom. Harriet is a slave and John is a free man, but she’s the woman he wants to be with all the same, he says, as he opines about her beauty in this flirtatious, ragtime aria for baritone and piano.

In a musical style strongly influenced by (and occasionally parodying) American popular music, the subtitle “Baroque” may seem a puzzle at first. It is also the key to Pann’s approach in composing for multiple wind soloists and ensemble. With Bach’s Brandenburgs in the rear-view mirror, Pann has created a glorious hybrid of inspirations with intricate counterpoint, cadenzas, beautiful slow textures, and wild rides, creating a 16-minute, fast-slow-fast concerto grosso. The published piano reduction is fully practical for live performance. Also available for clarinet and saxophone with piano (114-41972).

In Part II: The Rise of Humanity from Terra Nostra, Garrop has selected text by John Gillespie Magee, Jr. which describes the nearly spiritual arrival in space ("Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth"). This is but one of the major technical advances of humankind during a period of growth unconcerned with the effects on our planet. Of Terra Nostra, Garrop has said, "My hope in writing this oratorio is to invite audience members to consider how we interact with our planet, and what we can each personally do to keep the planet going for future generations. We are the only stewards Earth has; what can we each do to leave her in better shape than we found her?"

English composer William Squire (1871 - 1963) was renowned as a cello virtuoso, as well as a composer. His numerous instrumental works included several solos for cello with piano accompaniment that he performed on his concert tours. This collection, originally published for cello and piano, includes many of these popular works, such as the jaunty At Morn, the picturesque Cradle Song, and the impetuous Tarantella. These pieces, like many other cello standards, translate beautifully to the viola, with its similar tuning, strings, and range. These classic Squire melodies have been carefully transcribed and edited for the violist, with instrument-specific fingering and position suggestions, offering a wonderful new addition to the violist’s library of concert and contest repertoire.

“A Gresford Chaconne” was commissioned by the Leaman Junior High Band, Amy Bennett, director, to celebrate the retirement of her colleague Ronnie Pruitt. According to the Cantebury Dictionary of Hymnology, “Gresford is the name of a British hymn tune without words, to be played (usually by a brass band) while the congregation are silent in memory of a tragic event. It was written in the north-east of England in 1936 to commemorate the name of Gresford colliery at Wrexham North Wales, where there was a mining disaster in September 1934, when 266 miners were killed in an underground explosion.” Setting this British hymn as a chaconne was an easy choice for the composer as the strophic nature of the hymn (to which lyrics were added in 1970 by George Lister) lends itself well to this form. It is also an homage to Gustav Holst, whose 1st Suite for Military Band begins with arguably one of the most famous chaconne settings in wind band literature. The maturity of the formal setting and harmonic language of  “A Gresford Chaccone” belie its imminent playability;  the work is well within the abilities of a younger band.

Robert Frost (1874 - 1963) was one of the most popular, widely read and honored American poets of the 20th century; the two of his poems arguably most popular in the mainstream are “Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening” and “The Road Not Taken.” On the surface, these two poems appear quite different; “Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening” is contemplative, set in the quietude of a winter night’s  snow, while “The Road Not Taken” is decisive, kinetic and brightly lit by a morning sun. These similarities and differences resonated deeply with the composer, and the opportunity to set recurring themes and melodies in such contrasting musical environments was the impetus and inspiration for this two movement work. Both movements conjure the remarkably different atmospheres of the respective poems but are interconnected thematically, giving the work cohesion and depth. Both are strikingly colorful and evocative. While the poems are not set literally, there are recurring allusions to the words present in the rhythm, particularly in the phrase “and miles to go before I sleep,” as this line seems to especially reflect the physical and spiritual duality of both poems.

This SSA setting of “You Can Tell the World,” is unique, however, because it diverges from her previous settings for solo voice. The melodic elements remain unchanged from the solo version, however she creates excitement and urgency in the text as evidenced by the masterful eighth-note articulation in the lower two voices and a declarative cadence in vocal parts to replace the percussive energy of the piano provided in the original version.

Mechanically Speaking was composed with an image of interlocking pieces of machinery in mind – the composer imagined an industrial workplace with gears cranking and cogs turning. The opening of the work, particularly, sets this mood although there are many twists and turns throughout the piece. There is one particular motive that returns throughout the composition in many different guises. A perfect piece for the advanced student performer wishing to expand their repertoire of Australian classics.
