Chen Yi’s beautiful and highly-textured tone poem was inspired by ancient Chinese poetry; its melodic ideas were developed from musical phrases characteristic of Chinese opera. Covered over the garden, colors dark and light, Mirrored in the green water ripples.

Adolphus Hailstork

Theodore Presser Company

Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass

312-41906 - Performance Score - $2.50

Hailstork’s setting of Psalm 91 is an artistic expression featuring passages for Solo Soprano and Solo Baritone in relief to the many textures of the choir. While beautiful counterpoint permeates much of the work, the words “He is my refuge, my refuge and fortress” conspicuously recur in rock-solid block chords, representing the meaning of the Psalm.

for Violin and Orchestra

Chen Yi

Theodore Presser Company

Violin, Piano

114-42432 - Score and Parts - $32.99

Chen Yi describes her violin concerto SPRING IN DRESDEN as an American commemoration of the reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche, which was destroyed by American and British forces during World War II. Full of energy and excitement, the virtuosic solo line is accompanied by an ever moving and developing orchestra backdrop. According to the composer, rests inserted between long and short phrases evoke the feeling of negative space in Chinese painting, and sliding tones heard throughout are an application of erhu technique to Western instruments. Orchestra score and parts are available on rental (116-41963).

Three Bagatelles from China West

Chen Yi

Theodore Presser Company

Cello, Piano

114-42434 - Score and Parts - $29.99

Chen Yi's THREE BAGATELLES FROM CHINA WEST is a suite of Chinese folk songs. Originally written for flute and piano, many soloists and ensembles have requested transcriptions of these pieces for their own instruments—the sign of a true addition to the repertoire. Chen was inspired by authentic folk music from China West, and this work consists of exploratory compositions drawn from folk songs such as “Shange Diao,” written for a wind instrument called the Lerong, “Nai Guo Hou,” written for a different wind instrument called the Bawu, and “Dou Duo,” a folk song meant to evoke the sounds of Lusheng ensemble playing of the Miao People. For advanced players.

The film noir genre of 1940s cinema typically includes a strong but flawed male lead (often a detective), a beautiful woman who coerces the male into committing murder or is a killer herself (a “femme fatale”), and a twisting plot line that involves one or more homicides. These movies typically are shot in black and white, with emphasis on shadows and light, alcohol and cigarettes, trench coats and fedoras. Most of the story lines do not have happy endings. Inspired by this genre, Noir Vignettes consists of four movements, each depicting an aspect of film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale, and Last Cigarette.

EASTER MUSIC is a challenging and mysterious work for cello and piano. The piece culminates in a ceremonial atmosphere, with chant-like, repeated-note melodic lines in the piano played with the pedal down, and a finger cymbal part played by the cellist. For advanced performers.

Romantic and rhapsodic to the core, ROMANCE, ETUDE, AND CHORALE is a welcome addition to the piano four-hands repertoire. Although the composer has written numerous pieces for multiple pianos (Daydream and Nightmare for two pianos, eight hands; Variations on a Theme by Mozart for two pianos; and several others) or including piano four-hands as part of an ensemble (Appalachian Liebeslieder), ROMANCE, ETUDE, AND CHORALE is Liebermann’s first work devoted to the four-hands idiom itself. Pianists will be eager to bring this music to living rooms and concert halls the world over.

A modern master contemplates the past and looks to the future in Lowell Liebermann’s STRING QUARTET No. 6. Composed for the renowned Dover Quartet, Liebermann’s quartet is supremely expressive throughout. Cast in the unique frame of two Adagio movements (with many changes of mood and tempo within), the piece reconsiders the ancient forms of the ricercare, and the chaconne and fantasia, respectively. The second movement includes prominent quotations from the climactic scene of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, in which the slain Commendatore’s statue calls Don Giovanni to his fate from beyond the grave.

New Liszt Edition Series VII Vol. 2

Franz Liszt

Editio Musica Budapest Ltd.

Piano

510-07939 - $187.99

See Inside (JPG)

"De profundis", composed in 1834 but left unfinished, is a watershed in Liszt's development as a composer. This 'instrumental psalm' for piano and orchestra, lasting over 30 minutes, was inspired by Liszt's relationship with the Abbé Félicité de Lamennais. Lamennais' person and his book Paroles d'un croyant made such an impression on the 23-year-old musician that he dedicated "De profundis" to him. The only surviving source for the work is Liszt's working score. Although the music is not fully elaborated and lacks the final bars, the manuscript is nevertheless suitable for performance, with the necessary editorial additions, of this large-scale and impressive work by the young Liszt. The work was first published by Jay Rosenblatt in 1990; it was premiered the same year and recorded in 1991. This volume comes complete with a detailed preface on the genesis and significance of "De profundis" in English, German, and Hungarian, several manuscript facsimiles, and a critical report in English.

UE038137 - Score - $21.95

Bartók collected the material for the Romanian Folk Dances in Transylvania at the beginning of the century; Transylvania is the place where this folk-dance music is part of everyday life. Bartók considered this music so valuable that it became his new source of renewal of his musical language. This music was new in nature; it sounded strange to ears that were used to the classical tradition and consequently necessitated an exact specification of musical articulation to reproduce the character of the folk dances as authentically as possible. Originally written for piano, when transcribing this work for guitar, the publisher left Bartók's instructions (tempo, dynamics, staccato, tenuto, slurs) unchanged. This seemed to be indispensable to achieve a reproduction of the folk dances true to their character.

Dynamic, enthusiastic, rapturous, dancing - is the focus of these 14 short pieces for solo flute. The idea came from a composition commissioned by Wally Hase to the Berlin flutist, who wrote this series during the pandemic. One can send the musical greetings all at once, vary them in order, or even rearrange the order. A performance between several players could be interesting. Modern playing techniques, dynamic contrasts or rhythmic surprises turn the character pieces into combinations rich in contrasts, which are not only effectively convincing on stage, but can also be impressive competition entries.

Piano Sonata Op. 81a

Les Adieux

Ludwig van Beethoven

Wiener Urtext

Piano

UT050439 - $12.50

See Inside (JPG)

Beethoven’s Sonata Les Adieux is the composer’s only piano sonata with a programmatic background. The reason for its creation was the so-called 5th coalition war, in which Napoleon’s army invaded Austria in the spring of 1809, and the imperial family, including Beethoven’s patron and pupil Archduke Rudolph, had to flee Vienna. Whether the three movements directly reflect the Archduke’s farewell, his absence and his return, or the general fate of many during this war, is disputed today. The reference to Archduke Rudolph, already attested in Beethoven’s title, is, however, undeniable. This new edition is based on all relevant sources, the preface provides information about the historical background and the influence of this on the genesis of the work, the retrospective notes on interpretation by Beethoven’s pupil Carl Czerny are not only reproduced, but also critically commented on in footnotes.

Violin Sonatas

Volume 1 of Beethoven’s Sonatas for violin and piano includes the Three Sonatas Op. 12 composed around 1797/98 as well as the Sonatas Opp. 23 and 24 composed in 1800, the latter later becoming known under the epithet "Spring Sonata". Right from the start, Beethoven’s violin sonatas are duets for two equal partners. Musically, they are of different characters and are in no way inferior to the piano sonatas in terms of invention and boldness, both formally and harmonically. This new edition is based on all surviving original sources, plus the carefully edited reprints by Simrock. In the edition, plausible divergences between the two instruments (e.g. in the slurring) were retained; unsubstantiated adjustments were deliberately avoided. The notes on interpretation trace the essential aspects of performance practice from Beethoven’s time, both from a violinistic and from a pianistic point of view.

Along with the Papillons, the Davidsbündlertänze and the Kreisleriana, Robert Schumann’s Carnaval op. 9 is one of the composer’s most important piano cycles. Similar to the Faschingsschwank from Vienna op. 26, the individual character pieces refer to carnivalesque scenes of a masked ball, attended not only by the composer himself (under the pseudonyms Florestan and Eusebius), but also by other representatives of his field such as Frédéric Chopin and Niccolò Paganini as well as his later wife Clara (as Chiarina) take part. This new edition is based on the Urtext of the New Schumann Complete Edition. In the absence of manuscript sources (with the exception of sketches), the edition can essentially only be based on the German first edition; the incomplete French first edition was used for a critical comparison. The notes on interpretation take into account the instruments of Schumann’s time as well as historical sources on performance practice.

The 7th volume of the Urtext Primo Series features the works of only female composers. In line with the level of difficulty of the Urtext Primo Series (Grades 3–6), the range of composers has been expanded from three to nine, thus offering a wider range of composers and styles. The music included covers three centuries, which pays tribute to the original concept of featuring three composers in each of volumes 1–6. Elisabetta Gambarini and Marianna von Martines represent the 18th century, whereas 19th century music includes works by Louise Farrenc, Fanny Hensel, Clara Schumann, Francisca Gonzaga and Marie Jaëll. The 20th century is featured in the music of Mélanie Bonis and Lili Boulanger. As all other Urtext Primo volumes, the pieces come with playing and practice tips, as well as biographical information and a repertoire chart arranged according to the indicative difficulties of the music.
