The name Charles Carter is well known among band musicians for him numerous compositions for concert band. His trend-setting compositions in the 1960s and 1970s have become the model for school band music. Many of his compositions have become standard repertoire for contest/festival performance by school bands around the world. He will be remembered for his fresh melodic and harmonic perspective and his ability to infuse contrapuntal techniques into his pieces for young students. He studied music at Ohio State University and the Eastman School of Music. He spent a majority of his career as a professor of music at Florida State University.
