Chen Yi’s ELEGY was composed in 2020 both as her own response to the covid pandemic, and in conjunction with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s series of solo commissions for their performers offered through the SPCO’s website. Musically inspired by a common bond with SPCO oboist Cassie Pilgrim’s cultural heritage from southern China, Chen Yi drew from Cantonese folk music materials, whose Yifan mode is particularly sad and mournful. ELEGY was originally composed for solo oboe, and transcribed for solo bassoon by the composer.

The third movement, ALMS is a fast rondo, intense, bold, and always dance-like. It is about both tragedy and resilience. This music is primarily minor, yet with moments of playfulness, the recollection of happy times takes over. This seesaw between emotions is heard throughout the movement, and with Millay’s summing up of “reality being what it is,” the piece ends with strength, boldness, and finality.

Everything I Thought I Wanted was composed Fall 2022 through Spring 2023, when I was musing (perhaps more than usual) about my childhood wishes and dreams and trying to translate some of those musings into music. Full disclosure: this is an assignment I typically give my composition students; maybe I thought I’d try my own assignment. Sonically, this influenced the choice of instrumentation, and led to the inclusion of the toy piano, kalimba, glockenspiel, and crotales into the ensemble. Individual movements initially had specific impressionistic titles, though I removed them after they were completed, hoping to inspire more open-minded listening and personal imagery. I am deeply grateful to Doug Perkins, who organized the wonderful consortium of percussion studio teachers around the US to co-commission the work.

Marcel Tournier (1879–1951) was one of the most important harpist/composers in the history of the harp. Over his long career, he added a significant catalogue of very beautiful works to the harp repertoire. Many of his solo works, almost one hundred, have been consistently in print since they were first published. But in recent years harpist Carl Swanson has discovered a treasure trove of pieces by Tournier heretofore unknown and unpublished. These include the Deuxiéme Fantaisie de Concert in this edition.The Fantaisie was discovered by accident. A set of old photocopies of the manuscript was discovered in Germany. No one knows where the original manuscript is. With the help of the great harpist Catherine Michel, Swanson has put this piece into playable form, and it is now being published for the very first time. He and Catherine often had to re-notate some passages to show clearly how they are played, re-spell some notes that have to be played enharmonically, add fingerings, pedals, and pedal diagrams.Tournier wrote this piece when he was twenty-one, and before he became the impressionistic composer those familiar with his work know so well. It is in the late nineteenth-century romantic style that was taught at that time at the Paris Conservatory. The Fantaisie is an eight minute intermediate-level bravura piece by a first-rate composer, and a significant addition to much needed intermediate repertoire.

‘Land of the Free’ speaks of a tenuous state of American freedom in which our delicate equilibrium of checks and balances struggles to endure. In this modern era of social media, perception supersedes reality and the immediacy of online dialog encourages provocation over critical inquiry. The symphony’s five movements depict an emotional journey through this reality—feelings of resilience, confusion, dread, love, anger, sadness, desperation…and, ultimately, hope.

Dedicated to American violinist Amy Schwartz Moretti, the Violin Concerto is a challenging three-movement virtuosic showpiece. Presented in traditional concerto design, this work employs a flexible tonal system and draws from influences spanning classical and romantic symphonic works, dance music, and contemporary jazz. Each of its three movements, DARK, WARM, and ELECTRIC, speaks of an overarching emotional journey. The entire work is approximately 25 minutes in duration.

During the more than 100 years of presenting concerts, the Maverick has hosted many of the most celebrated classical and jazz musicians from all over the world. Timofeyeva’s Yiddishkeit, a transliteration of the Yiddish word for “Jewishness”, was composed in 2008. The earlier version of Yiddishkeit (for cello and 7-string guitar) was recorded by the Timofeyev Ensemble on their 2009 CD Shloyme. Timofeyeva arranged Yiddishkeit for cello and piano in 2022.

Natalia Timofeyeva was born to Ukrainian-Jewish parents who moved to Moscow from Odessa in the mid- 1930s. Young Natalia joined the Moscow Conservatory where she studied violoncello with Prof. Sergey Shirinsky and the young Mstislav Rostropovich. As a child, Natalia Timofeyeva was heavily traumatized by the Holocaust. Between 1941 and 1943 she lost many family members including her grandparents and her father. Timofeyeva began composing in the early 2000s, soon after her relocation to the United States. Her music combines a somber, tragic character with tenderness and life affirming playfulness.

It is written in a humorous style and depicts the American clown Edward Lavine, who appeared in the Marigny Theatre in Paris in 1910. This music reflects the character depicted, but also the pathos of the clown is conveyed through the varying musical styles and rhythmic contrasts.
